Timaru eats

For the love of good food we bring you a selection of must eats while in Timaru District.

In a District of world class food producers and amazing eateries it can be hard to choose where to go.  We’re doing the hard yards and eating our way around the District to save you time and calories.

Today we're focusing on a range of styles, dishes and dietary requirements for your summer eating pleasure.

Falafel Bowl

The Green Man at Peel Forest

You can't beat hanging out here, right in the heart of Peel Forest village, amazing food, amazing location and a fantastic range of craft beer.  Here's one for our friends who are dairy and gluten free, and/or vegan.  Their falafel bowl features mixed beans, peppers, mesclun and whipped hummus. Soooo tasty.

But wait there's more...

Did we mention the location?  Amazing pizzas, full breakfast menu, we love the beef burger and it's suitable for all your non-vegan friends AND they do a summer cocktail of the week!

Eggs Benedict

Mrs Ms Cafe, Timaru

Who doesn't love going out for brekkie, and if you're an eggs bene lover then pop along to Mrs M's Cafe to try their amazing example.  Free range eggs cooked to perfection. They have fantastic coffee, loads of freshly made cabinet food and delicious breakfast and lunch menus.

But wait there's more...

They claim to have the best cheese scones in town and they make a delicious gluten free variety.  Yummy homemade pies.  Central CBD location.  Good people watching.

Malai Kofta

Royal India Restaurant, Geraldine

Traditionally Malai Kofta is meatballs and heavy cream, but our friends at Royal India Geraldine do an amazing vegetarian version.

The kofta (balls) are like dumplings, made with paneer and mashed potato, they are crisp but also melt in your mouth.  Served with fluffy basmati rice and naan bread.

But wait there's more...

Authentic Indian flavours, lovely team, fantastic lunch specials.

Lime Cured Market Fish

Fusion Eatery, Timaru

Fusion Eatery launched an amazing summer menu in December.  Situated on the Bay Hill in a row of fantastic eateries, we recommend dining al fresco and taking in the views over Caroline Bay, blissful.

Our pick is from their snack menu, the lime cured market fish with coconut cream and chilli popcorn.

But wait there's more...

Fabulous breakfast menu.  Pop over the road and walk off your meal at Caroline Bay.

Caramelised Chicken and Noodles

Naruwan Restaurant, Timaru

Narrowing down a dish to profile at local favourite Naruwan was a bit tricky, so we've gone with our favourite off the current summer specials.  We love the set menu when dining in a group, and we promise you'll never leave this restaurant hungry.

But wait there's more...

Authentic Taiwanese food.  Great lunch specials. Spicy Pork Belly.  Takeaways.

NZ King Salmon

Benny's Again, Timaru

Attention salmon lovers, here's how they do it at Benny's Again - NZ King Salmon with a herb and parmesan crust, served on creamy mash, sautéed spinach and roasted cherry tomatoes.  A Timaru institution, Benny's has been trading for 16 years.  Did someone mention the Snickers keto cheesecake?

But wait there's more...

Fabulous desserts. Great children's menu. Lots of keto options.

Smashed Avocado

Barkers Foodstore and Eatery, Geraldine

Nothing says 'summer brunch' like dining alfresco on smashed avocado.  Barker's version is served on toasted sourdough with Barkers beetroot relish and goat feta.  The entire breakfast menu is divine, with fresh locally sourced products like the Geraldine Butchery's free range streaky bacon.  Be there before 11.30am to eat this delish dish, but if you’re not an early riser the lunch menu is also amzing and runs until 4pm.

But wait there's more...

Load your meal up with free condiments from the tasting station.  Do the Riverside Walkway before or after dining.

Lamb Tagine

The Oxford, Timaru

It was a toss up between the Coconut Battered Prawns, the Oxford Salad and the Lamb Tagine to profile in this blog.  We ate them all and played papers-scissors-rock and the lamb won.  Slow cooked lamb, Moroccan couscous, marinated carrot salad & flat bread, off the lunch menu, outstanding.

But wait there's more...

The building itself has an interesting architectural history.  Ask Clarissa for wine recommendations.  Brunch, lunch and dinner, all equally outstanding.

While you're here.....

Make the most of your visit to this beautiful District, get out and about with these awesome activities.
