Currency and cash

There is currently only one option for foreign currency exchange into NZ dollars in Timaru and this is  Northtown Mall Post Shop,  1 Ranui  Avenue, Timaru, phone 03 983 1425.  There is a minimum amount of $NZD100 and no large amounts can be changed.

Public transport - MyWay bus service

Timaru has an innovative on-demand public transport service.

MyWay by Metro is simple to book, and you’re in charge.  You say where you want to go, when you want to be picked up and from where. There’s no set route or timetable – it’s public transport based around your needs.

MyWay is available Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm. Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 8am – 6pm.

The fastest and easiest way to book your trip is through the MyWay by Metro app, available for free download from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. You can also book online, or by phoning our friendly team on 688 5544.

Vehicle hire & taxis

Taxis and driver/guide services can be booked at the Visitor Information Centre.

There are three taxis companies Timaru:

Taxis can be ordered by phone, or through the Information Centre. Please note Taxi cabs cannot be hailed from the footpath.

Free WiFi is available in locations in Timaru, Temuka and Caroline Bay. This service is free to everyone, with a daily limit of 500MB per device.

Wifi is also available at Timaru District Libraries – Timaru City, Temuka, Geraldine.

Many cafes in Timaru District offer free wifi to customers.

Shopping

The Central Business Districts of Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka are home to the main shopping areas of the towns.

In Timaru you will find a range of locally owned boutique shops and national chain stores.  In Temuka and Geraldine there is more of a focus on locally owned shops.
