Currency and cash

Our major banks are:

All these banks have ATM machines.  Banks can only exchange foreign currency into NZ dollars with a valid passport.

Vehicle hire & taxis

On cruise days a bus shuttle service operates from the port to the Visitor Information Centre in the Centre of Timaru. Taxis and driver/guide services can be booked at the Visitor Information Centre.

There is one taxi business in Timaru: Timaru Taxis (03) 688 8899.  Taxis can be ordered by phone, or through the Information Centre.

Please note Taxi cabs cannot be hailed from the footpath.

Free WiFi is available in locations in Timaru, Temuka and Caroline Bay. This service is free to everyone, with a daily limit of 500MB per device.

Wifi is also available at Timaru District Libraries – Timaru City, Temuka, Geraldine.

Many cafes in Timaru District offer free wifi to customers.

Open 9am – 6pm every day and from 1pm - 6pm on public holidays.

Shopping

The Central Business Districts of Timaru, Geraldine and Temuka are home to the main shopping areas of the towns.

In Timaru you will find a range of national chain stores and locally owned boutique shops.  Timaru has two main suburban shopping areas; Northtown Mall on Evans Street, and Highfield Mall on Wai-iti Road.

In Temuka and Geraldine there is more of a focus on locally owned shops.

Farmers markets

The Timaru Farmers Market is held Saturdays from 9am – midday, at Community House car park 27 Strathallan St.

The Geraldine Farmers Market runs from October – April each year. Saturday 9am -12.30pm at St Mary’s Church car park, Talbot St, Geraldine.
