See the world's smallest penguin

Timaru’s little penguin (or kororā) stands just 40 centimetres tall – and ranks as the smallest penguin the world.

Where to see the penguins

Caroline Bay has a resident rookery of penguins nesting among the rocks.

Best time to see the penguins

After sunset is the best time to see the little penguins as they come ashore. A good place to view them is Marine Parade, which is lit by the port security lights. They’re very noisy – so you’ll probably hear them before you see them.

Dog ban between October and March

Dogs aren’t allowed at Caroline Bay between October and March, during the penguins’ vulnerable breeding and moulting seasons.
