Popular with visitors, Geraldine is a charming boutique village just 30 minutes’ drive from Timaru and 1.5 hours’ drive from Christchurch. Plenty of accommodation options are available, including motel, hotel, backpacker, bed & breakfast or holiday park.

Taste gourmet food including handmade chocolates, award-winning cheeses from Talbot Forest Cheese, and of course the famous Barker’s of Geraldine fruit products and preserves. Find these gourmet delights at The Four Peaks Plaza.

Visit beautiful Peel Forest and the stunning Rangitata Valley, 1 hour 45 minutes’ drive on the Inland Scenic Route 72 from Christchurch. This area offers some of New Zealand’s best white-water rafting, kayaking, and walking experiences. Mountain-biking and horse-riding can also be enjoyed in this area; local guides can provide you with access to areas not normally accessible to the public.

Explore and sample the delights of South Canterbury produce. Try elderflower beverages, virgin flaxseed oil and locally produced organic yoghurt. Visit Opihi Winery (25 minutes’ drive south of Geraldine), or The Brewery Café, where several types of beer are brewed in the beautiful Gapes Valley (along the Geraldine-Fairlie Highway).

Enjoy the riverside walk and local mountain bike tracks in the Geraldine area. Dust off the golf clubs as there are two golf courses within minutes of Geraldine. Or enjoy a great afternoon out with the family and play the mini golf course at Café Mes Amis at Orari, five minutes’ drive from Geraldine, and great fun with cut-out horses, cows, a milking shed and even railway lines!

Watch a movie at the Historic Geraldine Cinema. Relax in the comfy couches and enjoy blockbusters to arthouse movies. In the interval, buy an ice cream or some Jaffa, especially if you’re sitting upstairs!

Visit Talbot Forest, an easy walk from Geraldine village. This is an excellent example of a rare remnant of lowland podocarp hardwood native forest. Enjoy one of four easy shady walks, take a picnic lunch and enjoy the views.

Geraldine boasts an array of friendly cafes, and after your caffeine fix, check out the local art galleries and take home a piece of local art to remember your visit by.

Take a scenic flight with Air Rangitata, based north of Geraldine and just a 15 minute drive away. You'll experience unforgettable views of the South Pacific East Coast, the Port Hills and of course the awesome Southern Alps. Visit the Rangitata Aerodrome and see the Heritage Museum collection of aviation memorabilia, and view the microlight aircraft housed there.

Visit the Geraldine Historic Museum and learn about the early days in the area, then head over to see the impressive collection at the Geraldine Vintage Car and Machinery Museum. There are more than 1400 exhibits, including the only surviving Spartan biplane in the world, and the oldest working tractor in New Zealand. Nearby is Geraldine’s Lace Museum, which features a large private collection of antique lace and also thread, weaving, spinning and sewing items.
