Horse trekking tours

Your horse trekking options are excellent in our region.

In Geraldine, you can join the team at Peel Forest Horse Trekking for a range of half day or full day treks that take in the forest and the Rangitata river.

Visit the Peel Forest Horse Trekking for more on prices and when to go.

Four Peaks High Country Track offers a three-day guided horse trek over a privately-owned high country station for experienced riders with their own horses.

If you’re headed to Tekapo, there’s Mackenzie Alpine Horse Trekking who offer a range of day treks, as well as their ever-popular overnight summer trek.

Alpine hiking

Geraldine’s Hidden Valleys offer a range of fully-guided adventure tours, including several alpine hiking tours.

The Dennistoun Pass Hiking Tour is more of an expedition than a straightforward tour.

Starting at Mesopotamia Station (about an hour’s drive north of Timaru), the three-to-five-day tour takes you into true wilderness and includes pick up either by helicopter or river raft.

For more information about alpine hiking with Hidden Valleys, check out the Hidden Valleys.

Snowshoeing (hiking in the snow, using specially-designed snow shoes and tramping poles) is another option.

Alpine Recreation offers customised snowshoeing tours around Lake Tekapo between July and September. Snowshoeing can be a great option for families. Alpine Recreation provide all equipment and a private hut.

Heli-tours and air safaris

Nothing beats an aerial view of snow-capped mountains.

That’s why heli-tours and air safaris are pretty popular in our region.

Based at the Timaru Airport is Sam Cox from Southern Wide Helicopters with the Mackenzie and Waitaki region where hunting, fishing, tramping and scenic experiences only 30 minutes away in flight time. Come and capture the natural beauty of New Zealand by air for yourself.

If you’re looking to head into the Aoraki Mt Cook district, check out the scenic flights available from The Helicopter Line who run a fleet of jet helicopters.

Or jump aboard an Air Safaris flighseeing tour. Check out the Air Safaris for more information on pick up from Lake Tekapo.
