Timaru Festival of Roses

Caroline Bay Park, Timaru, South Canterbury
Welcome to the Timaru Festival of Roses - the annual festival held to celebrate the arrival of summer and our city's close affinity with the rose.

The Festival is four days of activities, walks, talks, tours, exhibitions and displays, art, theatre and of course plenty of Roses. But it's not all roses - far from it. There are plenty of competitions, shows and activities for the whole family.

The Festival begins with the Shop Window Competition from Monday to Friday, Hospice SC Home and Garden tours and walks are on Friday 30 Nov and Sat 1 Dec, the various displays, competitions and exhibitions in the Caroline Bay Hall and other locations run Sat 1 Dec and Sun 2 Dec.

Last year the inaugural night market was huge, with perfect weather and massive crowds - let's hope for the same this year - on Sat 1 Dec following on from the Timaru Santa Parade.

The Christmas Market Roses on the Bay Market Day truly is the Grand Finale of the Festival of Roses on Sun 2 Dec

Every year thousands of people descend on Caroline Bay for this feast for the senses. Colour and exotic sights, music, enticing aromas, delicious tastes all add to the festive, friendly atmosphere that has been drawing crowds for years.

What makes the Market Day so special is its blend of the ever-popular favourites and exciting and innovative additions. Stall holders vie for a gorgeous trophy awarded to the Best Dressed Stall that fits with out International Christmas Market theme.

Plants are always in plentiful supply as craft from all over New Zealand and beyond, along with gourmet food and garden accessories – from outdoor art to furniture.

Besides the market stalls and all day live entertainment, there is entertainment in the Caroline Bay Hall with a Christmas themed Floral Art Designer of the year competition, the Children's Floral Fantasy (children's botanical art), Rose Society Rose Show, and rose themed rock painting. There is also the Baby Buds Photography Exhibition and contest with 100 photos of South Canterbury's most recent additions.

There are floral art flowers for home demonstrations on Sunday afternoon.

On Sound Shell stage our featured artists will be the ever popular Drama Queens along with local school groups and entertainers.

In the gardens the cultural level lifts again with Shakespeare in the Gardens - live Shakespeare set amid the Roses.
