On your roadie

If you're heading in, around and through Timaru District, here are some great things to do.

Caroline Bay winter beach time

Caroline Bay, is a beautiful recreational beach reserve right in the city, with plenty of parkland dedicated to biking and walking tracks.

The beach is safe to swim in (if you like a winter dip), and is home to Korora (Little penguins) from October to March.

It's a great place to burn off some energy.  You can exercise your four legged friends here too between 1 April and 30 September, as long as you avoid the penguin friendly areas at either end of the beach.

Cold day activities

If it's cold head indoors and burn off some steam at Chipmunks, or Flip Out Timaru.

Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre is a great place to swim and slide.  The South Canterbury Museum is a fascinating place to explore, and the Aigantighe Art Gallery is family friendly and free entry.

Movie Max Timaru is reopening on June 25!  Mark that in your diary.

Heritage trails

Feel like a drive?

Heritage trails were established in Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate Districts around 15 years ago, you may have seen the signs out and about.

The legends and creatives at WuHoo Timaru have taken them online, and are working on a project to make them even better, stay tuned for that.

In the meantime head to their website to see the Heritage Trails,.  Check out the Wuhoo Trails and WuHoo Day Trips too for more inspiration for your District roadie!

Destination eateries

Don't leave Timaru District without visiting our destination eateries.

Here are a couple to get you started.

Barker's Food Store and Eatery in Geraldine have a fabulous menu, plus you can stock up on their huge range of NZ made condiments, sauces and syrups.  It's a fabulous interactive gourmet experience.

Miaflora Cafe and Garden Centre on State Highway 1 at Winchester is set in the grounds of historic Kavanagh House built in 1914. Described as a 'hidden gem', the reviews on TripAdvisor are outstanding. There is plenty of off road parking and room for campervan parking directly across the road.

Vintage shopping in Temuka

Temuka is a must-stop for vintage lovers.

At last count there are five stores selling vintage goods. Rooms full of furniture and vintage treasure. Stroll the main street, you won't walk far between stores.

There are heaps of fabulous vintage stores throughout Timaru District, full of great finds and bargains.  From antique stores to charity shops and everything in between.

While you're in Temuka, check out the walking tracks, and the bike track at Temuka Primary School.
